SCHOOL CLOSURE - All schools in the Hawthorne School District will remain closed through the end of the 2019-2020 school year, but continuous instruction will be delivered to all students through our online learning model. Free "grab and go" breakfasts and lunches continue to be offered at select sites. Click to learn more.

In alignment with recommendations from the State Superintendent of Public Instruction and the Los Angeles County Superintendent of Schools, all schools in the Hawthorne School District will remain closed for the remainder of the 2019-2020 school year as part of the larger effort to prevent the spread of COVID-19.  While our school campuses will be closed, student learning will not be coming to an end.  Continuous learning and various student support services will be provided through online platforms.  Through access to these platforms, distribution of devices to those who need them, and the combined efforts of staff and families, we can ensure that our students receive the support that they need during these extraordinary times.  Numerous supports for families to assist their children in accessing and utilizing the online learning platforms can be found on our website.

The Hawthorne School District Nutrition Services Department is pleased to continue providing free breakfast and lunch for children 18 years and under.  Starting May 4th, families may pick up multiple Grab-and-Go meals from the school closest to their home on either Mondays and Wednesdays OR Tuesdays and Thursdays each week.  Children no longer need to be present for families to pick up the meals. The following HSD schools will be open for Grab-and-Go food distribution from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm:

    PTO Fundraising Is So Important!

Please support Jefferson students by participating in our fundraisers throughout the year. Our fundraising provides incentives for our students and staff in our efforts to promote positive behavior and morale here at our school. We have a PBIS (Positive Behavior Intervention and Support) system in place that our students love and special activities at selected grade levels. Let us know if you can assist us during the year with the various fundraising efforts.

Dear Parents or Guardians:                                   Para español oprima aqui

I hope all of you are healthy and well. As you are aware we have had 3 weeks of adjusting to our new Safe at Home reality, and following this Spring break we will be back in school virtually for the foreseeable future.  I wanted to reach out at the start of this time to make sure you receive the Jefferson Elementary School  Distance Learning Schedule that begins Tuesday,  April 21st. This is how we will be providing instruction, assessing students and offering support moving forward.  It is important that every family knows the schedule and has discussed how to structure their day and technological resources to help students succeed in this new structure. Please take some time over this break to set these supports in place before our return next week.

Please work with your child on learning how to access Google Classroom (there is a link on the Hawthorne School District website called, “ Google Classroom Parent Guide”). These are the main communication and instructional platforms our teachers will be using during virtual learning.  If there are questions or you are still in need of a chromebook or WiFi assistance, please select tech support on the HSD website  and a technician will reach out to you.

During this unprecedented time, communication is the key to our collective success.  Please work with your students to ensure they are logging in to their classes everyday, submitting assignments, checking their emails, reaching out to the teachers through their office hours  and communicating with them if they need support or additional time on an assignment. If you have questions, contact teachers sooner rather than later, and know that our counselors and administrators are still working and available to support families in any way we can.  Together we will find our way to a successful completion of the school year.

Starting Monday April 21st, following Spring Break, we will adopt a new schedule.  Students will be in school daily Monday -Friday and are expected to attend all classes. This schedule will remain in place for the remainder of the school closure. Teachers will provide instruction to students during the times mentioned in this schedule.

Students will be held accountable for attending class, completing assignments and completing assessments.

Jefferson School Receives Distinguished School & Honor Roll Awards

A California Distinguished School is an award given by the California State Board of Education to public schools within the state that best represent exemplary and quality educational programs. Approximately five percent of California schools are awarded this honor each year following a selection process.

The program was established in 1985 and alternates each year between elementary (even years) and secondary (odd years) schools. The schools are recognized as distinguished for four years, and after that the recognition may be renewed.

    Dear Students and Families:

On behalf of the Jefferson Elementary Community, I want to congratulate you and your children! Our school was recently recognized as a 2018 - 2019 Educational Results Partnership (ERP) Honor Roll School for our high achievement and student success! The Honor Roll program, sponsored by the Campaign for Business and Education Excellence (CBEE), is part of a national effort to identify higher-performing schools and districts that are improving student outcomes. Jefferson Elementary School is one of 1,798 public schools in California to be recognized.

The 2018 - 2019 ERP Honor Roll utilizes public school student achievement data to identify successful schools and districts. Our school stands above others in the state because of our demonstrated ability to get students to grade level achievement and beyond.
Schools that receive the ERP Honor Roll distinction have demonstrated consistent high levels of student academic achievement, improvement in achievement levels over time, and a reduction in achievement gaps among student populations.
Here are a few important facts about the ERP Honor Roll:

    • It’s the only award given in collaboration with business leaders
    • It establishes a higher bar of performance than any other award
    • It is conducted by Educational Results Partnership, a nonprofit organization that maintains the nation’s largest database on student achievement

We did not apply for this award. Our results led them to us! Because of our accomplishment, we will be featured on the ERP Honor Roll website and a banner has been designed for us to hang proudly at our school.

We are thankful for the hard work of our students and teachers here at Jefferson Elementary School. This recognition is a testament to the sustained focus on academic results and commitment to student success that our school and parent community have shown over the years.

Again, congratulations and let’s keep up the great work.

    Mr. Godin
